MICHAEL MARQUEZ ARCHITECTS

This custom residence in the Hollywood Hills was a site
constricted project in the greatest sense of the word. The
dramatic sloping site was the perfect setting for a unique
Spanish hillside home.
The shallow, severely sloping site at the top of Nichols
Canyon Road, near Mulholland, did not allow for
conventional yards. So decks, patios and courtyards were
arranged to become comfortable outdoor living spaces, tying
directly into the adjacent conventional indoor living
experience. The design utilized an inverted plan, entering
from the street on the upper floor with all of the public
spaces and then proceeding to the lower level for the three
bedroom suites.
Upon entering the property, you walk into a large courtyard
which serves as a buffer to the street behind you and as the
main outdoor living space for the Living Room. As you step
into the Entry, you are welcomed by a stunning view
through the Dining Room of the valley below. The Living to
the right stretches the full depth of the house and also has a
small patio to the south, overlooking the valley as well. The
Kitchen and the Family Room are on the opposite side of the
upper floor and also open onto a private trellis covered
patio, complete with an outdoor fireplace and BBQ.
The shallow lower level focuses all of its energy on the view
and light to the south. The large Master Suite contains the
sleeping area recessed into the massive surrounding walls, a
retreat with heavy built-in bookcases and fireplace, the
expansive walk-in closets and a glorious bathroom capturing
the fabulous views and glorious morning light.
This was the first of two homes designed and constructed
for Carl and Tom. This house was reoriented and enlarged to
be constructed on a larger site with a better view of
Hollywood, two years after they moved in this house. Look
